Add a watermark in Excel

Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel for the web, Excel 2019, Excel 2016, Excel 2013, Excel 2010.

Microsoft Excel doesn’t come with a built-in watermark button. But you can use an image, like a logo, to create a watermark.

Create a watermark

  1. Firstly, choose Insert > Header & Footer.
  1. Secondly, press the header and on the Header & Footer tab on the ribbon, select Picture.
  1. Thirdly, pick one of the displayed options to add your image.  In the header, you’ll see & [Picture].
  1. Lastly, click anywhere beyond the header to see the watermark.

Format the watermark picture

  1. Firstly, select the header in the spreadsheet.
  1. Next, on the Header & Footer tab, press Format Picture.
  1. Thirdly, in the Format Picture dialogue box, press Picture tab > Colour > select an option.
