Add slide numbers, page numbers, or the date and time

Applies to: PowerPoint for Office 365, PowerPoint 2019, PowerPoint 2016, PowerPoint 2013, PowerPoint 2010, PowerPoint 2007.

You can insert slide numbers and the date and time to your presentation.

Add slide numbers or notes page numbers

  1. On the View tab, in the Presentation Views group, press Normal.
  1. On the left of your screen, in the pane that has the slide thumbnails, select the first slide thumbnail in your presentation.
  1. On the Insert tab, in the Text group, choose Header & Footer.

  1. In the Header and Footer dialogue box, do one of the following:
  • If you seek to insert slide numbers, press the Slide tab, and then choose the Slide number checkbox.
  • If you want to create page numbers within notes, choose the Notes and Handouts tab, and then click the Page number checkbox.

  1. If you want to insert page numbers to every slide or all notes pages in your presentation, press Apply to All.

Change the starting slide number

You can alter the starting slide number, number only one slide, or skip the slide number from the first slide. Here’s how.

  1. On the Design tab, in the Customise group, press Slide Size > Custom Slide Size.
  1. In the Slide Size box, in the Number Slides from drop-down list, pick a starting number.

  1. On the Insert tab, in the Text group, select Header & Footer.

  1. In the Header and Footer dialogue box, pick the Slide tab.

  1. Do one of the following:
  • To number your chosen slide, click the Slide number checkbox, and then select Apply. Repeat this step for the specific slides that you want to number.
  • To number each slide except the first, press the Slide number checkbox, pick Don’t show on title slide, and then choose Apply to All.

Add the date and time

  1. On the View tab, in the Presentation Views group, press Normal.
  1. By the left of your screen, in the pane that includes the slide thumbnails, choose the first slide thumbnail in your presentation.
  1. On the Insert tab, in the Text group, pick Date & Time.
  1. In the Header and Footer box, do one of the following:
  • If you want to apply the date and time to your slides, choose the Slide tab.
  • If you want to set the date and time to your notes pages, pick the Notes and Handouts tab.
  1. Confirm the Date and time checkbox, and then do one of the following:
  • If you want the date and time to equal the current date and time every time you open or print the presentation, press Update automatically, and then click your preferred date and time format.
  • If you want to specify the date and time to a unique date, select Fixed, and then in the Fixed box, enter in the your suited date.
  • By setting the date as Fixed, you can easily monitor the last time you revised it.
  1. If you want to set the date and time to each slide, notes page, or handout in your presentation, press Apply to All.
