You can modify the settings, like the name, for a column in a list or library. Depending on the column and list type, you can apply additional changes, such as the amount of text a user can enter. Particular settings, including column width, can’t be configured without using SharePoint Designer. For more details, see Create a custom list view using SharePoint Designer.
You can also alter the order in which columns appear in a list or library view.
Note: To edit a column for a list/library, you must at least be a member of the default Designers SharePoint group for the site.
Change the order of how the columns are displayed
- If the list or library is currently closed, pick its name on the page or in the Quick Launch. If the name of your list or library is hidden on a page, press settings, choose Site Contents, and then select the name of your list or library.
- Pick the header of your target column to move, then drag and drop it to the suitable area. Repeat as needed.

- In the Manage Views group, press Modify View.

- Select the down arrow under Position from Left in the columns section of the Modify View page for the column name you want to edit.

- Press the down arrow under Position from Left in the columns section of the Modify View page for the column name you want to adjust.
Change the settings for a column in a list or library
- If the list or library is currently closed, pick its name on the page or in the Quick Launch. If the name of your list or library is hidden on a page, press settings, choose Site Contents, and then select the name of your list or library.
- In the ribbon, select the List or Library tab.

- In the Settings group, press List Settings or Library Settings.

- Press the name of the specific column to edit in the Columns section on the List Settings or Library Settings page.

- Modify the desired settings, and then select OK to save.
