Insert footnotes and endnotes

Applies to: Word for Office 365, Word 2019, Word 2016, Word 2013, Word 2010, Word 2007.

Footnotes emerge at the bottom of the page and endnotes appear at the end of the document. A number or symbol on the footnote or endnote corresponds to a reference mark in the document.

Word uses a number or symbol to associate the note with a reference point in the document
  1. Click in the specific area for referencing the footnote or endnote.
  1. On the References tab, choose Insert Footnote or Insert Endnote.
On the References tab choose Insert Footnote
  1. Type your desired content in the footnote or endnote.
  1. Return to your location in the document by double-clicking the number or symbol at the start of the note.
