Applies to: Word for Office 365, Word 2019, Word 2016.
Word proactively converts a web address into a link when you tap Spacebar or Enter, if you entered “http://” at the beginning.
If you want to link from “friendly text” in your document, the quickest way is to begin by copying the address to the clipboard:
- Copy the address from your browser’s address bar.
- Access your document in Word, and highlight the desired text to be the link.
- Press Ctrl+K.
- Paste the address and tap Enter.
- Later, if you want to edit the link, right-click it and select Edit Hyperlink.
Follow links while editing
While you’re altering your document, selecting a link lets you edit its display text (friendly text). To follow a link, hold Ctrl+Click.
Tip: If you’d prefer to follow links only by choosing them, press File > Options > Advanced and empty the Use Ctrl+Click to follow hyperlink checkbox.
