Status

The OneNote product team is constantly investigating this issue. We apologise for any inconvenience that this problem may have caused you and will update this article once further details are confirmed.

In the meantime, we encourage you to test any or all of the following workarounds to determine if they resolve the problem.

Common steps to resolution

To rule out the most common causes for error 0xE0000007 with OneNote, do the following:

  1. Verify that you have good network connectivity for your computer or mobile device by using your browser or another cloud-based app.
  1. Force OneNote to sync the present notebook by doing any of the following, based on the version of OneNote that you’re using:
  • In OneNote for Windows 10, select the Show Notebooks button until you notice the notebooks list, right-click the your sought notebook name to sync, press Sync, and then choose Sync This Notebook.
  • In OneNote 2016, pick File > View Sync Status, and then choose Sync Now beside the desired notebook to sync.

Note: If you’re unsure what version of OneNote for Windows you have, see What’s the difference between OneNote and OneNote 2016.

  • In OneNote for Mac, press the Show Notebooks button until the notebooks list is visible, Control-click the preferred notebook name you want to sync, and then select Sync This Notebook.
  • In OneNote for iOS, pull down the Notebooks list (or the Recent Notes list) to dictate a sync of all open notebooks. Alternately, you can pull down the section list or page list to trigger a sync of the current notebook.
  1. Ensure you are using the latest version of OneNote for your computer or mobile device. Do any of the listed actions, according to the version of OneNote that you’re using:
  • In OneNote for Windows 10, press Start, scroll to and then choose the Store app. In the Store app, search for OneNote, visit its app page, and then select the Update button, if it appears. (If the button says Launch instead, this indicates that you own the most recent version).
  • In OneNote for Mac, click the App Store app, and then press Updates at the top right of the toolbar.

Note: If you installed OneNote for Mac together with Microsoft Office, see Check for updates in OneNote for Mac.

  • In OneNote for iOS (iPad or iPhone), launch the App Store app, and then tap Updates. If a OneNote update is available, press Update next to it, or touch Update All to update all apps.
  • In OneNote for Android, click the Play Store app, tap the menu icon, and then press My apps & games. If a OneNote update is available, select Update next to it, or touch Update All to update all apps.
  1. Wait to confirm if the error vanishes after a reasonable period of time. In some cases, the error can be triggered by an intermittent issue with our servers.

Try opening your notes in OneNote for the web

If the previous steps did not resolve the issue for you, check to see if you can view your notebook in OneNote for the web.

  1. In your browser, visit www.onedrive.com and sign in with the exact account that you use with OneNote.
  1. Find the folder where your specific notebook is located (typically Documents or Notebooks), and then select the notebook’s name to access it in OneNote for the web.

Depending on the result of these steps, here’s what to do next:

  • If you can access the notebook in OneNote for the web and you observe each of your live alterations and updates, then you can use OneNote for the web to complete your work.
  • If you’re able to open the notebook in OneNote for the web but all of your recent updates are not visible, ensure you back up a copy of the original pages that have not saved to OneNote for the web. To do this, return to your primary OneNote app (OneNote for Windows 10, OneNote 2016, or OneNote for Mac) and copy the pages from the existing notebook to any other notebook that is unaffected by the 0xE0000007 error. After this, you can now access that notebook in OneNote for the web.
  • If the notebook in OneNote for the web is inaccessible while you’re signed in, it means that you are unauthorised to open and edit it. For example, if the notebook is shared with you by another person through OneDrive or OneDrive for Business, guarantee that the notebook’s owner hasn’t revoked your permission to open and edit it.

Close and reopen the notebook or notebooks affected by error 0xE0000007

If the previous steps did not fix the issue for you, you have the option of closing and relaunching your notebooks to force OneNote to resync your notes. It is worth emphasising that this should only be done given you have a recent backup of the notes concerned.

Warning: Following the steps below may cause loss of data. Specifically, if any of your affected notebooks had unsynced changes pending when you experienced the 0xE0000007 error, you could lose those changes if you continue. Please understand that if you opt to continue with the steps below, nobody can recover the lost information for you, not even Microsoft Technical Support.

If you’re certain that you have no significant changes to your notes pending, or if you are prepared to potentially losing any unsynced changes, you can try the following, depending on the version of OneNote that you’re using:

  • In OneNote for Windows 10, select the Show Notebooks button until you see the notebooks list, right-click the sought notebook to close, and then press Close This Notebook.
  • In OneNote 2016, choose the name of the current notebook to present the Notebooks bar, right-click the preferred notebook to close, and then press Close This Notebook.

Note: If you’re unsure what version of OneNote for Windows you have, see What’s the difference between OneNote and OneNote 2016.

  • In OneNote for Mac, press the Show Notebooks button until you see the notebooks list, Control-click the desired notebook you want to close, and then pick Close This Notebook.

After closing any affected notebook, try reloading it again. If this does not resolve the issue, you can produce a new notebook and then replicate the pages and sections from your initial notebook (the one affected by the 0xE0000007 error) to the new notebook and then sync your changes there until a permanent solution is found.
