Summary of Excel Formulas

Set a formula that refers to values in other cells

  1. Choose a cell.
  2. Enter the equal sign (=).
  3. Press a cell or enter its address in the chosen cell.
  4. Type an operator. E.g., + for addition.
  5. Choose the next cell, or enter its address in the selected cell.
  6. Hit Enter. The outcome of the calculation displays in the cell alongside the formula.

View a formula

  1. When a formula is typed into a cell, it also shows in the Formula Bar.
  2. To check a formula, choose a cell, and it will show in the Formula Bar.

Type a formula that includes a built-in function

  1. Click a blank cell.
  2. Enter an equal sign and next, type a function.
  3. Enter an opening parenthesis (.
  4. Indicate the cell range, followed by entering a closing parenthesis ).
  5. Hit Enter for the result.
